The Practice Ground at Bhubaneswar’s iconic Kalinga Stadium transformed into a vibrant canvas of colour, music, and energy today as the five-day State-Level Children’s Festival, ‘MAHAK-2026’, officially commenced.
Organised by the Odisha State Child Protection Society (OSCPS) under the aegis of the Department of Women and Child Development, the festival brings together talented young minds from Child Care Institutions (CCIs) spanning all 30 districts of Odisha.
The celebration opened with a ceremonial launch as Chief Guest and Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Smt. Pravati Parida, released a cluster of colourful balloons into the sky, marking the start of the state-wide event.
Addressing the gathering, Smt. Parida delivered an inspiring message of hope, dignity, and self-belief to the participating youth.
“Dream big and explore new horizons; the Government stands with you,” said Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, reassuring the young participants of the state’s unconditional support in shaping an empowered, self-reliant future.
Joined by Guest of Honour Shri Prithviraj Harichandan, Hon’ble Minister for Law, Works and Excise, the leaders praised the morale, artistic talent, and resilience demonstrated by the children who earned their spots after winning district-level qualifiers across the state.
A Dual Celebration: Culture & Athletics
Following a soulful rendition of the State Anthem, ‘Bande Utkala Janani’, performed by children from Adruta Shishu Gruha, Khordha, the festival laid out its comprehensive five-day roadmap (November 3 to 7).
The event is split into two distinct segments to promote holistic development:
-
MAHAK (Nov 3 – Nov 4): A two-day creative immersion focusing on arts, dance, music, debate, painting, and quiz competitions. Winners will be felicitated in a grand ceremony tomorrow.
-
UTSAH (Nov 5 – Nov 7): A three-day sports extravaganza designed to foster team spirit, physical endurance, and competitive excitement.
Key Milestones Unveiled
In addition to launching the cultural activities, the Department of Women and Child Development marked the occasion by formally releasing the ‘Orphan Survey Report 2025’, underscoring the state’s evidence-based commitment to child welfare and institutional care improvement.
Distinguished officials present at the inauguration included Dr Mrinalini Darswal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, and Smt. Monisha Banerjee, Director, along with senior leadership from across the department.
Through structured initiatives like MAHAK-2026, the Government of Odisha reaffirms its dedication to ensuring every child under institutional care receives equal opportunities, mentorship, and a platform to reach their fullest potential.
