CTI Delhi police protest ban

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has written to the Delhi Police Commissioner urging an immediate ban on rallies, sit-ins, and protest marches in central commercial zones until November 11, the day of Bhai Dooj.

The traders’ body revealed that repeated demonstrations over the past month caused an estimated Rs 14,000 crore in losses during the crucial festive shopping season.

CTI specifically requested that no permissions be granted for demonstrations at high-footfall areas, including Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar, Ramlila Maidan, India Gate, Rajghat, and Delhi Gate.

According to CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal, a massive political rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1 alone triggered severe disruptions, resulting in an estimated Rs 10,000 to Rs 11,000 crore in retail and wholesale losses as nearly 2.5 lakh shops remained shut.

With major shopping events like Dhanteras and Diwali approaching, CTI emphasised that the next fortnight is decisive for 20 lakh business owners and 75 lakh workers.

The organisation suggested shifting large political assemblies to the city’s periphery to prevent traffic congestion and market blockades, while also raising the issue of compensation for affected businesses. Delhi Police has yet to issue a formal response.
