Sunrisers Hyderabad held their nerve in Hyderabad to secure a 10-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in a contest shaped by explosive starts and decisive blows in the middle overs.
Put in to bat first after CSK won the toss and elected to field, Sunrisers rode a ferocious opening from Abhishek Sharma. The explosive left-hander tore into the CSK bowling attack with a stunning 59 off just 22 balls, striking at an extraordinary rate of over 268. His blistering assault, supported briefly by Travis Head’s quick 23, powered Hyderabad to 75 runs inside the first six overs, even as wickets fell in quick succession.
The innings then found crucial stability through Heinrich Klaasen, whose composed yet aggressive 59 off 39 balls provided the perfect balance and direction after a brief slowdown. Klaasen anchored the middle phase, helping SRH add 101 runs between overs 6 and 17. Despite losing wickets towards the end, Sunrisers posted a competitive 194 for 9 in 20 overs, with Klaasen contributing nearly a third of the total during the vital middle overs.
Chennai’s chase began unevenly with the early loss of Sanju Samson, but young Ayush Mhatre counterattacked brilliantly with a brisk 30 off 13 balls, briefly shifting the momentum. Matthew Short and Sarfaraz Khan then kept CSK in contention, taking the score to 112 by the eleventh over.
The turning point arrived through Eshan Malinga, whose three wickets in the middle overs slowed the chase significantly and applied crucial pressure. Although Chennai needed just 48 runs from the final five overs at one stage, disciplined death bowling from SRH — led by Praful Hinge and Nitish Kumar Reddy — restricted the visitors. CSK finished on 184 for 8, falling short by 10 runs in a tense finish.
The victory marks back-to-back wins for Sunrisers Hyderabad, propelling them into the top four of the IPL 2026 points table and boosting their playoff prospects significantly. For Chennai Super Kings, the defeat adds to their challenges as they continue to search for consistency this season.
Abhishek Sharma’s explosive start and Eshan Malinga’s match-defining spell stood out as the defining performances in a high-quality T20 encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
This win not only showcases SRH’s fighting spirit at home but also highlights the depth in their squad, with both batters and bowlers stepping up under pressure. Fans can expect more fireworks as the IPL 2026 season intensifies.
