The Basti Basinda Milita Manch (Slum Dwellers’ Joint Forum) has called for a demonstration in front of the State Assembly today, demanding protection of the rights and rehabilitation of slum residents across Odisha.
The protest is scheduled to take place on Gandhi Marg and is expected to draw participation from residents of several urban settlements.
According to the forum, the agitation aims to highlight growing concerns over demolition drives carried out without adequate notice or proper rehabilitation arrangements. The organisation has also raised issues regarding delays in the implementation of the JAGA Mission and the lack of sufficient safeguards for the land rights of slum dwellers.
The protesters have demanded that all eligible families be provided lawful rehabilitation and resettlement support before any eviction is undertaken. They argue that displacement without alternative housing arrangements undermines the rights and livelihoods of vulnerable urban communities.
Speaking at a press conference, leaders of the forum said that removing slum residents in the name of urban development is unjust and fails to acknowledge their contribution to the growth of cities. They urged the government to accelerate the implementation of housing and land entitlement programmes, strengthen legal protections for land rights, and ensure permanent housing solutions for residents living in informal settlements.
Participants from various bastis are expected to join the demonstration, which the organisers said will be conducted peacefully. Through the protest, the forum seeks to remind the government that slum residents play a vital role in urban development and that their rights and dignity must be protected while pursuing infrastructure and city expansion projects.
