Fresh off their successful defence of the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, India are set to continue their momentum with a refreshed squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced the 15-member squad for the tour of Harare, with Shreyas Iyer named captain and Tilak Varma appointed vice-captain.
The selection reflects a clear intent to blend experience with exciting young talent as the team looks to build depth ahead of future challenges.
India’s squad for the Zimbabwe T20I series:
The squad features several exciting inclusions. Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns a well-deserved opportunity after impressive domestic and franchise performances.
One of the most notable inclusions is Rinku Singh, who returns after missing the UK tour. Despite a modest IPL 2026, selectors are banking on his finishing prowess to bolster India’s middle order.
In contrast, Sanju Samson’s omission has raised eyebrows. Despite being Player of the Tournament in India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year, his poor run in England—just six runs in three matches—proved costly.
Wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh adds depth behind the stumps alongside Ishan Kishan. Pace options like Mayank Yadav, Yash Thakur, Prince Yadav and Ashok Sharma bring variety to the bowling attack, while all-round contributions from Shivam Dube and Suryansh Shedge add balance.
The three-match series will be played at the Harare Sports Club:
- 1st T20I: Thursday, 23 July 2026
- 2nd T20I: Saturday, 25 July 2026
- 3rd T20I: Sunday, 26 July 2026
This tour provides an excellent platform for the next generation of Indian cricketers to step up against a competitive Zimbabwe side on their home turf. With Shreyas Iyer at the helm and Tilak Varma supporting as vice-captain, the leadership group is expected to foster an aggressive, fearless brand of cricket.
In a related development, the Selection Committee has named Shivam Dube as a replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against England.
India’s updated ODI squad
As India enter a new phase under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy in the shortest format, all eyes will be on how this talented mix performs in Zimbabwe.
The series promises high-scoring encounters and valuable match practice for several players eyeing bigger roles in the future.
