Shreyas Iyer in Line to Replace Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI Captain: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering Shreyas Iyer as India’s next ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma nearing the twilight of his international career.

A report in Dainik Jagran suggests Iyer is being viewed as a long-term option to lead India in the 50-over format, possibly until the 2027 World Cup.

While Shubman Gill was earlier seen as a contender for all-format captaincy, the selectors have opted against handing him another leadership role, citing workload concerns. Gill already captains India in Tests and is currently the vice-captain in T20Is.

Iyer, 30, has been in strong form, playing a pivotal role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year with 243 runs in five matches. In ODIs, he has already amassed 2,845 runs in 70 matches at an average of 48.22, including five centuries. His leadership potential, coupled with batting consistency, has strengthened his case.

Rohit Sharma, who turned 38 this year, continues to lead the ODI side. However, with both him and Virat Kohli retired from T20Is and Tests, speculation is mounting that the upcoming Australia ODI series in October could mark their final international appearance.

If Rohit decides to step down, Iyer could take charge as early as the Australia series. If not, the transition may be delayed, with the BCCI expected to hold key discussions after the Asia Cup.

Meanwhile, sources within the board maintain that appointing a single captain across formats is unrealistic given the packed cricket calendar. With Gill set to lead the Test side against West Indies in October, the board believes sharing leadership responsibilities will prevent burnout.
