The Supreme Court has ordered enhanced police patrolling around educational institutions, universities, and coaching centres across Delhi.
Hearing a suo motu cognisance case regarding recent rape incidents in Delhi-NCR, a bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran mandated strict verification for all public transport and app-based cab drivers (including Ola, Uber, and Rapido) and real-time monitoring of vehicle tracking systems.
The bench stressed that directives must translate into “visible, timely and verifiable action” rather than remaining confined to paperwork. It ordered the establishment of dedicated “war rooms” for 24-hour CCTV surveillance and proactive policing around vulnerable dark spots and unauthorised establishments.
Crucially, the apex court fixed direct personal accountability on the Delhi chief secretary and police commissioner, warning they will be personally answerable if compliance reports are not met by Nov 6. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on Nov 16.
