A candid interaction between King Charles III and a former tech employee has gone viral after the British monarch was filmed intently listening to a man recount his experience of being laid off by Microsoft.
The viral encounter took place in London during a high-tech creative music workshop hosted at Apple’s Battersea Power Station venue, organized in collaboration between The King’s Trust charity and Apple.
Listening to Real-World Tech Sector Realities
In the video circulating on social media platforms, King Charles can be seen speaking with a young workshop participant while Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook stands behind them, listening in.
The participant shared his journey of transitioning through career development programs after losing his job during corporate downsizing:
”I’ve actually done several courses. So, I used to work at Microsoft, and unfortunately, there was a lay-off worldwide,” the participant explained to the King.
The initiative, part of the newly launched Apple x King’s Trust Creative Labs, aims to equip young individuals with practical skills required to enter creative industries, offering hands-on training with industry mentors.
High-Profile Royal and Tech Gathering
In addition to King Charles and Tim Cook, legendary musician Sir Elton John—a long-standing supporter of both Apple Music and The King’s Trust—also attended the session.
Taking to social media platform X following the event, Tim Cook posted:
”We were honored to host His Majesty King Charles III in London and celebrate Apple’s work with the @KingsTrust. We were thrilled the incomparable Sir Elton John joined us for a moment at Apple Music Hall!”
The interaction came against the backdrop of earlier workforce restructuring across major global technology firms, including Microsoft’s trim of approximately 4,800 roles globally earlier this year.
