The Odisha government will attach satellite transmitters to the legs of migratory birds this year.

Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia made the announcement, highlighting the state’s commitment to strengthening bird conservation efforts.

The minister explained that the transmitters will provide accurate data on the arrival and departure routes of migratory birds, especially species like the Greater Flamingo. “This will help us understand where these birds travel after the winter season,” he said.

Last year, in 2025, two Greater Flamingos were tagged with transmitters, which revealed their journey from Chilika Lake to Andhra Pradesh’s Kolleru Lake. Building on that success, the Forest Department now plans to tag 20 different bird species in 2026.

Officials noted that the devices will allow researchers to study migration paths, habitats, and environmental impacts more effectively. Conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a milestone for Odisha’s biodiversity research.

The department assured that bird safety and health will remain the top priority during the tagging process. The move is expected to provide valuable insights at the international level on migratory bird behaviour and conservation strategies.
