In a match that had everything—early collapses, match-defining spells, and a finish straight out of a script—Royal Challengers Bengaluru scripted one of the most dramatic victories of the season, beating Mumbai Indians by the barest of margins on the final ball in Raipur.

The equation was simple yet terrifying heading into the last delivery: one run needed, three wickets in hand, and an entire stadium holding its breath. When the ball was hit and the scramble completed, RCB had reached 167 for 8, sealing a one-run win and triggering wild celebrations in the dugout. The two points not only lifted RCB to the top of the IPL points table but delivered a knockout blow to both Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, officially ending their playoff dreams.

Mumbai had earlier posted a competitive 166 for 7 after a horror start. Slumping to 28 for 3 inside the powerplay, they looked dead and buried until Naman Dhir (47 off 32) and Tilak Varma (57 off 42) stitched together a gritty recovery. The pair added crucial runs in the middle overs, but the damage had already been inflicted by RCB’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The experienced seamer produced a spell for the ages—4 for 23—dismantling the top order and ensuring Mumbai could never truly cut loose.

The chase got off to the worst possible start for RCB. Virat Kohli, the talisman, was dismissed for a first-ball duck, and when the score lurched to 39 for 3, the game looked firmly in Mumbai’s grasp. Enter Krunal Pandya. The all-rounder played with ice-cool composure, smashing 73 off just 46 balls and single-handedly dragging RCB back into the contest. Even as wickets tumbled around him, Krunal refused to panic, finding boundaries at the right moments and keeping the required rate under control.

Just when Bengaluru seemed to be cruising toward victory, Mumbai’s Corbin Bosch turned the contest on its head. His explosive spell of 4 for 26 removed key middle-order batters Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma in quick succession, before also accounting for Tim David. The pressure gauge shot back to maximum. Suddenly, the game was anyone’s.

With the equation boiling down to the final over, calm heads prevailed at the crease. RCB’s lower order showed remarkable composure under the lights, rotating strike intelligently and refusing to throw away the game. The final ball summed up the entire evening—pure theatre, pure tension, and ultimately pure joy for the Bengaluru camp.

Beyond the two points, the result reshaped the entire playoff landscape. RCB’s stunning rise to the summit has injected fresh belief into their campaign, while Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants were left to contemplate an early exit. In a season defined by twists, this Raipur thriller may well be remembered as the moment the playoff picture was locked in.

For RCB, it was more than a win—it was a statement. For MI, it was a painful reminder that even the best recoveries sometimes aren’t enough. Cricket, once again, delivered the kind of drama only this format can.
