A low-pressure area developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the north Sri Lanka coast early Monday, raising attention among meteorologists and residents across coastal regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the system formed at 5.30 am on May 11 under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka. The associated circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. Officials noted that the system may intensify further and become more marked within the next 48 hours.
Despite the formation of the low-pressure area, IMD clarified that Odisha faces no immediate threat. The department has not issued any warning or forecast regarding the possible impact on the state. Weather experts also indicated that the system is unlikely to alter Odisha’s conditions significantly.
Meteorologists continue to monitor the Bay of Bengal low-pressure system closely, as such systems often evolve during the pre-monsoon season. However, current assessments suggest limited influence on Odisha’s weather.
