The Malkangiri Forest Department seized 155 live turtles on Wednesday after intercepting a three-wheeler auto near Tamasa during a patrol based on a special tip-off.
Officials of the Malkangiri forest range were checking the area when they spotted an auto approaching at high speed. Staff stopped the vehicle. The driver jumped out and fled. Forest personnel tried to catch him but in vain.
A search of the abandoned auto revealed 155 live turtles. The department is now searching for the person who was transporting them.
Officials said turtle meat is eaten in large quantities in the district and such consignments have been rising. They said anyone found involved in the case will be arrested without delay.
The rescued turtles are in the custody of the forest department.
