Rath construction for the world‑famous Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri came to a sudden halt on Wednesday after Vishwakarma Maharana artisans staged a sit‑in protest.
The dispute arose over their traditional entitlement to collect leftover timber pieces known as khei and chirata wood.
Normally, Maharana artisans and other servitors begin work between 8 and 9 a.m. every day. However, on the 58th day of construction, work did not start, leaving the Rathkhala silent. The artisans argued that, according to established practice, they receive timber pieces shorter than four feet as khei. They also claimed the right to collect chirata wood regardless of size.
The controversy escalated after the temple administration issued a notice restricting the collection of such timber. Maharana artisans responded by halting construction and demanding a resolution. They declared that work would not resume until the administration addressed their concerns.
The stoppage has raised anxiety over Rath Yatra preparations, as the festival draws millions of devotees from across the world. Discussions are expected soon to resolve the issue and ensure the timely completion of the chariots.
