Southwest monsoon remained active in Odisha with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning reported in several coastal and adjoining districts.
The Regional Meteorological Centre confirmed that the monsoon will cover the entire state within three days. Rainfall activity is expected to increase from June 21 as strong winds from the Arabian Sea strengthen the system.
On Wednesday, the monsoon advanced into Odisha and parts of Chhattisgarh. Weather conditions favour further progress into Telangana, Jharkhand, Bihar, and more areas of Odisha within the next two to three days. Meanwhile, Kalbaisakhi storms and heatwave conditions continued in parts of the state.
Officials recorded heatwave conditions in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Koraput, and Bolangir districts. Rourkela witnessed thunderstorms with rain and lightning. The Meteorological Centre forecast no major change for the next two days, followed by a drop in temperature by 2–3 degrees across most districts.
Authorities warned of stormy conditions along the Odisha coast and sea till June 21, with wind speeds reaching 40–50 km per hour. Fishermen received advisories to avoid venturing into the sea between June 18 and June 21. Heavy rainfall alerts were issued for Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati districts. Orange warnings were announced for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts due to thunderstorms with lightning and winds up to 60 km per hour. Jharsuguda and Sambalpur faced heatwave alerts, while 11 coastal districts received squally weather warnings.
