A 16‑year‑old boy, identified as Bhagirathi Sisha, died after being struck by lightning while reportedly using his mobile phone during a thunderstorm in Darengaba village under Nandapur block on Wednesday evening.
Family members said Bhagirathi was watching his phone while it was connected to a charger and wearing earphones when the incident occurred. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning was lashing the area at the time.
Relatives rushed him to the Nandapur Community Health Centre (CHC) in a 108 ambulance, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. The incident has plunged the village into mourning, with residents gathering at the CHC to console the bereaved family.
