In a landmark boost to Odisha’s infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the construction of a new 160.18-km coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradip at an estimated cost of ₹8,300.79 crore.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi hailed the development as the beginning of “a new chapter” in the state’s infrastructure journey.

The project, to be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) in two packages, will feature a four-lane access-controlled stretch from Rameshwar to Konark and a two-lane highway with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradip. It will pass through Khurda, Puri, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur districts, significantly enhancing connectivity along Odisha’s coastline.

Speaking on the approval, CM Majhi expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. “This coastal highway will transform Odisha’s coastal economy, reduce travel time by approximately 2.5 hours, and open new avenues for tourism, industry, commerce, logistics, and overall economic growth,” he stated.

Game-Changing Benefits for Odisha

  • Faster Travel & Better Connectivity: The new route will slash journey times, offering safe, seamless movement for passengers and freight.
  • Economic Catalyst: It is expected to accelerate development in coastal regions, support ports, SEZs, food parks, and tourism hubs like Konark while generating lakhs of man-days of employment.
  • Strategic Impact: The highway will strengthen regional linkages, uplift living standards for coastal communities, and position Odisha as a more attractive investment destination.

CM Majhi emphasised that the project reflects the Centre’s strong commitment to world-class infrastructure in Odisha and will play a pivotal role in the state’s holistic development. Construction is anticipated to begin soon, marking a major stride toward realising the vision of a developed coastal economy.
