The Central Government has proposed significant changes to the Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) norms under the Central Motor Vehicle Amendment Rules.
According to the draft notification, the validity of PUCC for BS‑VI vehicles up to six years old may be extended to three years, eliminating the need for frequent renewals. Currently, new vehicles must obtain a PUCC after the first year and renew it every six months.
Under the proposed changes, BS‑VI vehicles aged between six and ten years will require PUCC renewal once a year, while those older than ten years — including BS‑VI and BS‑IV models — will continue to need certification every six months.
Officials said the move aims to simplify compliance, reduce congestion at testing centres, and encourage adherence to emission standards. The proposal has been circulated for stakeholder feedback before final implementation.
If approved, the new rules will mark a major shift in India’s vehicle emission monitoring system, aligning with global best practices and offering convenience to millions of vehicle owners.
