Stand-up comedian Pranit More and web developer Himanshu Jangra have been booked by Gurugram Police following controversy over alleged objectionable remarks made during a comedy show at DLF Cyber Hub earlier this year.
The case was registered after a video clip from the April 12 event went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and prompting intervention by the National Commission for Women (NCW).
NCW Intervention Leads to Police Action
According to police officials, the NCW took suo motu cognisance of the viral video and issued a notice to Haryana Police, seeking action over comments that were allegedly derogatory and sexually offensive towards women.
Authorities stated that the commission viewed the incident as a serious matter involving remarks that could be interpreted as violating the dignity and modesty of women.
A senior police official confirmed that the notice was forwarded to Gurugram Police through the state police headquarters, following which a formal investigation was initiated.
FIR Registered Under Multiple Legal Provisions
Police have registered a case against both individuals under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
The charges include allegations related to sexual harassment, sexually coloured remarks, circulation of obscene content, and statements that could potentially disturb public order.
Investigators have also seized the viral video and CCTV footage from the venue as part of the ongoing probe.
Police Summon Both Accused
Gurugram Police have issued notices to both Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra, directing them to appear before investigators for questioning.
Officials said the investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the remarks, the role of both individuals, and the subsequent circulation of the content on social media platforms.
Further action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the investigation.
Public Apologies Do Not End Legal Proceedings
As criticism intensified online, both More and Jangra issued public apologies expressing regret over the remarks made during the event.
However, police officials clarified that apologies do not automatically nullify criminal proceedings and that the investigation will continue as per legal procedures.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Jangra’s employer has terminated his employment following the controversy.
Social Media Debate Continues
The incident has sparked a wider debate about the boundaries of comedy, public accountability, and responsible speech in digital spaces. While some have defended artistic freedom, others argue that public performances must not normalise comments that are perceived as offensive or degrading.
As the case progresses, authorities are expected to review all available evidence before deciding on the next course of action.
