Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented an exquisite Odisha Ikat handloom to Indonesian Parliament Speaker Puan Maharani during his recent visit, spotlighting India’s rich textile heritage on the global stage.
Popularly known as Bandha, Odisha Ikat is one of the state’s most celebrated handloom traditions. Crafted through a meticulous tie-and-dye technique where yarns are dyed before weaving, the textile is renowned for its intricate curvilinear motifs, feathery edges, and identical patterns on both sides of the fabric.
Weaving centres such as Sambalpur, Nuapatna, and Bargarh have nurtured this art form for generations, making Ikat a living symbol of Odisha’s cultural identity. Its vibrant colours and storytelling patterns embody the craftsmanship of local weavers while preserving the region’s heritage.
By gifting this masterpiece, PM Modi not only honoured Odisha’s artisans but also underscored the role of handlooms in strengthening cultural diplomacy. The gesture is expected to boost global recognition of Odisha Ikat, reinforcing its place as a timeless treasure of India’s textile legacy.
