Baripada: A team of veterinary experts on Sunday successfully operated out a plastic rope which was found in the leg of the injured elephant at Masinakati forest under Betonati range here in Mayurbhanj district.

A team from OUAT, Bhubaneswar and veterinary surgeons of Similipal conducted the surgery on the ailing jumbo. The team found a big wound on the leg of the animal.

The team of forest officials on Sunday tranquilized the pachyderm before conducting the surgery. The medical experts administered necessary medicine for speedy recovery after the operation.

It is suspected that the elephant might have entangled in the trap planted for poaching wild animals in the forest.

The wild life rescue team has kept a close watch on the condition of the animal.

On the other hand, locals alleged that the elephant had suffered from the wound for the last two months. Even though they informed the forest department about the incident, no immediate measures had been taken to treat the jumbo, they alleged.
