Dhamnagar: In his first reaction to media after registering a thumping victory in the by-poll to Dhamnagar assembly constituency, BJP’s Suryabansi Suran said that it is the victory of people of Dhamnagar.
“This is the victory of every citizen of Dhamnagar. It is a real tribute to their late leader and former MLA to whom they used to shower their blessings, love and affections. I am much indebted to the citizens of Dhamnagar. It is a challenge for me to fulfill the expectation of the people. I hope we would comfortably do that,” Suraj told media.
“I am very nominal. Filing of nomination was only my duty. It is the people of Dhamnagar who won the by-election today. A youth, a mother and a farmer of Dhamnagar were contesting the by-election. Credit only goes to the common people,” he said.
He also conveyed his gratitude to the top BJP leadership including Union Minister Dhamendra Pradhan, State President Sameer Mohanty, Manmohan Samal, Golak Mohapatra and otgher party leaders and supporters.
Suraj also specially thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose welfare activities also worked in the Constituency.
Suraj defeated BJD’s Abanti Das by a margin of 9,881. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of BJP MLA Bishnu Charan Sethi in September.
Sethi’s son Suryabanshi Suraj, who was the party’s candidate, secured 80,351 votes, while BJD’s Abanti Das bagged 70,470 votes, the official said.
Congress nominee Baba Harekrushna Sethi got only 3,561 votes. Rajendra Das alias Raju, who was fighting the by-poll independently after being sidelined by the BJD, received 8,153 votes.
