A Modern Touch to History—Major Upgrades Coming to Paralakhemundi Railway Station

Paralakhemundi Railway Station, one of Odisha’s most historic railway landmarks, is set for a significant transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

With a redevelopment budget of ₹16.4 crore, the project aims to modernize passenger amenities, enhance accessibility, and preserve the station’s rich heritage.

Established in 1899 under the patronage of the Gajapati Maharaja of Paralakhemundi, the station holds historical significance as the first dedicated railway line in Odisha, originally a part of the Paralakhemundi Light Railway (PLR).

The upgrade will integrate state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring a comfortable and seamless travel experience for passengers.

Key Upgrades Under the Scheme

✔ Modern Passenger Amenities: Reserved lounge, first-class waiting hall, general waiting hall, and premium toilets with Divyangjan-friendly features.

✔ Enhanced Accessibility & Safety: A 12-meter-wide foot overbridge (FOB) and two new lifts will improve accessibility, complemented by better lighting and security measures.

✔ Architectural Revamp: The new design will reflect elements of the Royal Palace of Paralakhemundi, blending tradition with modern infrastructure.

✔ Sustainability Features: Landscaping, energy-efficient lighting, and multi-modal transport integration will contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.

Ongoing & Completed Works

🔹 FOB construction is in its final stages.

🔹 Electrification of Platform 2 and installation of illuminated signage boards are progressing.

🔹 VIP Lounge, First-Class Waiting Hall, and General Waiting Hall have been completed.

🔹 Ongoing efforts include circulating area expansion, toilet construction, and additional passenger amenities.

The revitalization of Paralakhemundi Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme will not only enhance passenger facilities but also preserve its historical essence, reinforcing its role as an integral part of Odisha’s cultural heritage.
