Fraudulent online portals are exploiting the faith of devotees by offering ‘special paid darshan’ at the historic Puri Jagannath Temple, officials said.
A website named India Thrills has allegedly advertised various packages such as Rs 100 for ‘quick darshan,’ Rs 500 for ‘VIP darshan,’ and Rs 50 for ‘night darshan.’ The site also included detailed historical and ritual information to appear credible.
Temple authorities clarified that darshan is entirely free, and no such paid scheme exists. Multiple websites have been found circulating similar misinformation, some even quoting puja charges in foreign currency for overseas devotees.
Cyber Police Investigation Underway
Following complaints, the temple’s security administrator, Hemant Padhi, lodged a formal case with the Cyber Police. “Darshan at the temple is free. Anyone charging money online in the name of darshan is cheating devotees,” he said. Puri SP Prateek Singh confirmed that cyber experts have begun investigating the matter, assuring strict action.
Cash-for-Darshan Allegations on Ground
Reports from the Singhadwar show temple staff and volunteers allegedly accepting cash to facilitate entry, despite police presence. The incident has drawn sharp criticism, reflecting past episodes of malpractice. The temple administration and the Puri Collector have ordered inquiries into the matter.
“We are committed to ensuring that devotees are not exploited and the sanctity of the temple is preserved,” officials said.
