Jayanti Buruda, fondly known as the ‘Jungle Rani’ of Malkangiri, has achieved a milestone by appearing on the popular television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).
Selected as one of 10 contestants from across India, she was the only representative from Odisha.
Buruda, who grew up in Serpalli village collecting firewood and mahua flowers with her mother, had long dreamed of reaching the KBC stage. Although she could not clear the final hurdle to sit on the coveted ‘hot seat’, she described the experience as unforgettable. “I am proud to represent Malkangiri and its tribal community. Meeting Amitabh Bachchan and contestants from other states was a very special moment,” she said.
Born into a Koya tribal family as the ninth of 11 siblings, Buruda overcame early challenges in education with the encouragement of her village teachers. She became the only girl in her class to clear the Class 10 examination, later pursuing journalism to highlight the struggles of tribal communities. Her work has earned recognition from Forbes India and several honours for social service.
Her journey from the forests of Malkangiri to national television reflects perseverance, education, and a commitment to giving tribal communities a wider voice. While she missed the ‘hot seat’ this time, Buruda remains hopeful of another chance in the future.
