In response to a recent unfortunate incident involving an Ama Bus, a high-level review meeting was convened today to discuss the safety, operations, and management of Ama Bus services, following instructions from the Chief Minister of Odisha.
The meeting was chaired by Smt. Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Housing & Urban Development Department. Senior officials in attendance included Transport Commissioner Shri Amitabh Thakur, Managing Director of CRUT Shri Sanjaya Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shri Jagmohan Meena, Traffic DCP, and other officers.
After the meeting, Smt. Padhee briefed the media and announced the formation of a five-member high-level committee, chaired by her, to enhance monitoring, operational discipline, and safety for Ama Bus services. The committee includes the Transport Commissioner, DCP, Traffic DCP, and a senior CRUT officer.
The committee will convene every 15 days to review operational performance, safety measures, and passenger services. They may also hold meetings at any time to address urgent issues.
Smt. Padhee indicated that additional mini buses will be added to the Ama Bus fleet to improve operational efficiency and last-mile connectivity. She also mentioned that the driver recruitment process will be further tightened. Newly recruited drivers will undergo rigorous training, which includes a mandatory five-day evaluation and testing to assess their driving skills, road safety awareness, lane discipline, and behavioural standards.
A close watch will be maintained on overall management for the next month to ensure strict compliance with safety and operational standards. Smt. Padhee described the recent incident as “deeply unfortunate” and assured that every possible measure would be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future. An investigation is underway, with accountability to be established once the inquiry is completed.
To promote positive behaviour, drivers and conductors who demonstrate exemplary conduct will be rewarded with monthly incentives. It was also decided that the mechanical condition of all operational buses will be checked daily to ensure they are roadworthy.
Regarding accident statistics, it was shared that between February and December 2025, seven people lost their lives, and 97 others were injured in accidents involving Ama Buses.
To strengthen traffic discipline, lane driving has become mandatory for Ama Bus services. The Police and Traffic Police will monitor the movement of Ama Buses using the Smart City surveillance system.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and commuter-friendly public transport services, with a strong emphasis on accountability, enforcement, and passenger safety.
