With road accidents claiming precious lives every day due to speeding, helmet violations, traffic rule breaches, and drunk driving, the Odisha government is taking decisive steps to make the state’s roads safer.
In a significant move, Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan chaired the first preparatory meeting today in Bhubaneswar for an upcoming two-day workshop on road safety and accident reduction.
The workshop aims to curb the growing number of mishaps fuelled by rapid population growth and lack of awareness.
During the meeting, the minister stressed several critical measures:
- Modern technology-driven road construction to build accident-free highways and roads
- Identification and scientific management of black spots across the state
- Preparation of a comprehensive district-wise action plan through inter-departmental coordination
- Deployment of ambulances in high-risk accident-prone zones for faster emergency response
- Construction of pedestrian-friendly roads as per National Road Congress guidelines
- Development of wayside amenities and designated parking spaces for heavy vehicles
Minister Harichandan highlighted that a well-coordinated strategy involving multiple departments is essential to reduce fatalities and ensure safer travel for citizens.
The high-level meeting saw the participation of top bureaucrats including Sanjay Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, Works, NBS Rajput, Principal Secretary, Commerce & Transport and Amitabh Thakur, Transport Commissioner.
Senior officials from the Public Works Department, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and Transport Department were also present.
The upcoming two-day workshop will bring together stakeholders to finalise concrete strategies and ensure effective implementation of the action plan across Odisha.
