A fresh debate on national pride and patriotism has erupted in Odisha’s political circles after Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari issued a stern warning against disrespecting the national flag.
Speaking in the run‑up to Independence Day celebrations, Pujari said strict action will be taken against anyone found dishonouring the tricolour. “Love the tricolour, say Vande Mataram. Even now, some people refuse to recite Vande Mataram. This is an anti‑patriotic attitude. There were people who loved the British then; there are still some such people today,” he remarked.
The Minister made it clear that disrespect to the national flag or patriotic sentiments will not be tolerated. His comments have triggered discussions in political circles, with questions raised about whom the warning was directed at.
Meanwhile, the state government has directed officials across districts to ensure proper observance of Independence Day and respect for the tricolour during all celebrations.
