In a festive boost for students and faculty, the Odisha government has announced an additional holiday on Monday, October 20, 2025, for all state public universities and colleges under the Higher Education Department—except those in Nuapada district.
This closure is in honour of Diwali, the vibrant festival of lights, allowing the academic community to join in the statewide celebrations without academic disruptions.
The decision, conveyed through an official notification (No. 56535/HE dated October 18, 2025) from Deputy Director Rajata Kumar Mansingh of the Planning and Training Cell (PTC), references a prior alert from the Revenue and Disaster Management Department (Notification No. 39041 dated October 18, 2025) and a departmental letter from December 6, 2024. It specifies that this Monday off will serve as a substitute for one of the remaining local holidays, ensuring no loss in the annual quota.
While most institutions will observe the closure, Nuapada district’s colleges and universities remain operational, possibly due to localised administrative considerations.
Higher education officials have urged institutions to inform students promptly and adjust any scheduled events accordingly. “This additional holiday will enable our youth to fully immerse in the spirit of Diwali, fostering cultural continuity alongside their studies,” said a senior department spokesperson.
“🎉 Diwali glow-up alert! Odisha just dropped a Monday holiday bomb for colleges & unis (Nuapada, you’re on your own 😏). Extra day for sweets, lights, & zero lectures on Oct 20. Who’s celebrating? #OdishaDiwali #FestivalVibes #StudentLife”
