NIT Rourkela organised a one-day workshop on “Waste Management for Sustainable Village” on March 26 as part of its role as the Regional Coordinating Institution under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.
Faculty members from 18 higher educational institutions across Odisha participated in the event, which focused on capacity building, best practices, and structured interventions for rural development.
The inaugural session featured remarks by Prof. Shekha Rai, Prof. R.K. Behera, Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao, Prof. Bibhudatta Sahoo, and Prof. Rohan Dhiman. Prof. Rao highlighted the importance of sustainable waste management in rural areas, while Prof. Dhiman outlined NIT Rourkela’s community initiatives, including health camps, sanitation drives, organic farming, and renewable energy awareness. Prof. Sahoo announced plans to train engineering students through EPICS projects, aligning with the National Education Policy 2020.
Technical sessions provided insights into grassroots waste management models, MSME schemes, and the integration of sustainable practices into village clusters. Experts, including Dr Ajay Kumar Mohanty, Prof. Rajkishore Patel, and Prof. Himanshu Bhushan Sahu, shared case studies and practical approaches.
The workshop concluded with participant feedback and a campus tour, reinforcing institutional preparedness to implement sustainable waste management practices.
