A 27-year-old undertrial prisoner died allegedly by suicide inside the District Jail at Bangar under Ramachandi Police Station limits on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Dipti Ranjan Swain, aka ‘Silu’, son of Paramananda Swain, a resident of Dahana Kumbharpada area under Satyabadi Police Station limits in Puri district.
According to police sources, Swain was lodged in the jail since June 3, 2024, as an undertrial prisoner in connection with a rape case (Case No. 361/23) registered at Satyabadi Police Station on October 21, 2023.
Jail officials reported that Swain had spoken to his elder sister over the phone in the morning. Later, when he went to the toilet and did not return, jail staff searched for him and found him hanging with a towel around his neck inside the toilet. He was immediately shifted to Puri District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Upon receiving information from jail authorities, Ramachandi Police reached the spot, inspected the CCTV footage, and registered a case (Case No. 03/26). The investigation into the matter is underway.
