New Delhi: The Supreme Court declared on Thursday that a re-examination cannot be mandated simply because some students wish to retake it; such an action is only justified if the integrity of the examination has been compromised.
The court continued its deliberations on several petitions concerning the alleged paper leak and irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud underscored the urgency of the situation, noting that millions of students are eagerly awaiting a verdict.
In the course of the hearing, it was disclosed to the Supreme Court that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented a second status report on its investigation into the purported paper leak and related misconduct.
The Court highlighted the delicate nature of the investigation, mentioning that disclosure of the CBI’s findings at this juncture could potentially hinder the investigative process.
The justices challenged the attorneys for the petitioners to prove that the paper leak was pervasive and significantly impacted the exam, to the extent that it would necessitate voiding the entire examination.
Addressing the petitioners’ plea to annul the NEET-UG 2024 exam results for all candidates, the Supreme Court stated that a retest would only be permissible if the exam’s “sanctity” was extensively violated.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court requested comprehensive details regarding the top hundred scorers in the NEET-UG 2024 exam, including the cities these top performers are from.
