Mumbai: Several persons died after they got trapped under the rubble of their homes in Mumbai’s Chembur and Vikhroli areas following heavy rains here.
A red alert has been sounded in the city and people have been advised not to venture out in the open.
“About 4-5 houses affected. 10 dead bodies have been retrieved by Local BMC/ Fire brigade personnel before NDRF reached and 01 dead body of female has been retrieved by NDRF team,” the National Disaster Response Force said in a statement.
“Further 6 to 8 persons are feared to be trapped. NDRF team under command Inspector Rahul is at the incident site and search and rescue operation is going on,” NDRF added.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) disaster management cell, the accident was reported at around 6.30am when the retaining wall of a house collapsed due to a tree fall, it said.
In a separate accident, three people died and two were injured after four to five houses collapsed due to a landslide in the Vikhroli area due to heavy rainfall overnight. The accident was reported at around 2.40am.
