Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced that the Monsoon Session of Parliament will run from July 20 to August 13, 2026.

President Droupadi Murmu approved the summoning of both Houses for meaningful debate and decisions on issues of national importance.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the controversial 130th Constitution Amendment Bill is expected to adopt its report on July 17. Sources indicated that the committee will retain the most debated provision mandating automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Union or State ministers from office if they remain in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days in serious offence cases.

Stakeholders raised concerns about potential misuse of the clause for political vendetta. The JPC is expected to include safeguards to prevent motivated prosecutions while maintaining accountability in public office. Supporters of the amendment argue that it strengthens transparency, while critics warn it could destabilise elected governments.

The Opposition is also likely to raise privilege proceedings against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Congress alleged that Singh misled the House by making false statements about casualties of Indian soldiers during Operation Sindoor.

The Monsoon Session is expected to witness heated debates on constitutional reforms, accountability in governance, and defence-related controversies. With the JPC report scheduled before the session, Parliament will face one of its most contentious discussions in recent years.
