A tragic incident occurred near Vani Vihar in Bhubaneswar when a local youth was swept away by the strong current of an open drain during heavy rainfall on Saturday.
Rescue teams launched an urgent search operation to locate him.
The missing youth has been identified as Anil Singh (35), a resident of Patharbandh Basti. Witnesses said Anil went near the drain to retrieve a polythene bag after removing his slippers. The powerful water flow pulled him in, and he disappeared instantly. His companion alerted nearby residents, who informed the police and fire services.
Teams from the Odisha Fire Service and Sahid Nagar Police Station reached the spot and began rescue efforts. Divers entered the drain to search for Anil, while officials monitored the operation closely. Mayor Sulochana Das visited the site and directed authorities to intensify the search.
Police suspect the strong current dragged Anil deep into the drain network. Officers said the investigation will continue until he is found. The incident has raised concerns about open drains and safety measures during monsoon rains.
Reports indicate that since 2015, the open Drain in Bhubaneswar has claimed seven lives. Residents urged the municipal corporation to install protective covers and improve drainage systems to prevent further tragedies.
