Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha Nomination Rejected: Congress Alleges ‘Seat Theft’ in Madhya Pradesh

A dramatic twist has emerged in the race for Madhya Pradesh’s third Rajya Sabha seat after Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was rejected by the Returning Officer, triggering a major political controversy just days before the June 18 election.

The rejection has sparked sharp reactions from the Congress, which has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to manipulate the electoral process and undermine democracy.

Why Was Meenakshi Natarajan’s Nomination Rejected?

According to officials, Natarajan’s nomination was rejected after a complaint filed by BJP candidate Mahesh Kevat. The complaint alleged that she failed to disclose information related to a pending legal matter in Telangana in her nomination affidavit.

Kevat’s legal team argued that the omission constituted a violation of election disclosure norms. Following scrutiny of the documents, the Returning Officer rejected the Congress leader’s nomination.

The decision effectively removes the Congress candidate from the contest unless legal intervention overturns the order.

Congress Calls It ‘Seat Chori’

The Congress has strongly contested the rejection, describing it as politically motivated.

Meenakshi Natarajan alleged that the BJP was attempting to “steal” a Rajya Sabha seat after realizing that opposition unity could challenge its plans.

According to Natarajan, legal arguments submitted by Congress lawyers were not properly considered before the decision was made.

She stated that the party would challenge the rejection through all available legal and constitutional avenues.

Congress Says No Criminal Case Exists

Congress leaders have argued that the rejection is based on a misleading interpretation of the rules.

Party leaders claimed that Natarajan had only received a show-cause notice in Telangana and that no criminal case had actually been registered against her.

Congress leaders maintain that election rules require disclosure only when a formal case has been filed, not when a preliminary notice has been issued.

The party insists that the nomination rejection lacks legal merit.

Rahul Gandhi Aide at the Centre of Political Storm

Meenakshi Natarajan is considered one of Rahul Gandhi’s long-time associates and has held several important positions within the Congress organization.

A former Youth Congress president and Congress general secretary, she represented Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur constituency in the Lok Sabha between 2009 and 2014.

Her candidature was seen as a key move by the Congress to secure the third Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh.

BJP’s Surprise Move Changed the Contest

The Rajya Sabha election became politically significant after the BJP fielded Mahesh Kevat as its third candidate despite already being assured of two seats because of its Assembly strength.

The BJP’s decision transformed what appeared to be a comfortable contest for the Congress into a high-stakes political battle.

With Natarajan’s nomination now rejected, the BJP appears to have gained a major advantage in the contest.

Congress Approaches Election Commission

Senior Congress leaders, including K.C. Venugopal, Sachin Pilot, and Jairam Ramesh, have approached the Election Commission seeking intervention.

Venugopal described the rejection as an attack on democracy and accused the BJP of attempting to influence the election outcome through procedural tactics.

The Congress leadership has vowed to pursue both legal and political remedies.

Numbers Game in Madhya Pradesh

The BJP currently holds 163 seats in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly, while the Congress has 61 legislators.

Under the proportional representation system used for Rajya Sabha elections, a candidate requires 58 votes to secure victory.

While the BJP is comfortably positioned for two seats, the third seat had become a closely watched contest before the latest controversy.

What Happens Next?

The Congress is expected to challenge the rejection before the appropriate legal authorities and the Election Commission.

The outcome of that challenge could determine whether the battle for Madhya Pradesh’s third Rajya Sabha seat continues or effectively ends before polling day.

With accusations of political interference, allegations of procedural violations, and high-profile leaders entering the debate, the controversy has already become one of the biggest political flashpoints ahead of the June 18 Rajya Sabha election.
