The government of Manipur has ordered a temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services across five districts after violent protests erupted over the tragic deaths of two children in a suspected rocket attack.
Authorities confirmed that services have been shut down in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur for three days to maintain law and order amid escalating tensions.
Children Killed in Suspected Rocket Strike
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in Bishnupur district, where a projectile struck a residential home while the family was asleep.
A five-month-old girl and a five-year-old boy lost their lives, while their mother sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment in Imphal.
Officials indicated that the house belonged to a personnel of the Border Security Force, raising serious concerns about targeted violence.
Suspected Militant Involvement
Preliminary reports suggest the involvement of suspected Kuki militant groups in the attack. The explosion occurred in Moirang Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, a locality considered vulnerable due to its proximity to conflict-prone areas near Churachandpur.
Security forces also discovered an unexploded rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) near the site, indicating the potential for further attacks.
Government Response and Security Measures
Manipur Home Minister K Govindas strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “barbaric act” and assuring that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Security deployment has been significantly increased across affected regions. Authorities have launched intensive search operations and surveillance in nearby hill areas to prevent further escalation.
Internet Shutdown to Prevent Escalation
Officials stated that the internet suspension is a precautionary step to curb the spread of misinformation, prevent mobilization of violent groups, and restore peace in the region.
Residents have reported heightened tension, with protests breaking out following the incident. The administration is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with central forces to ensure stability.
