The regional meteorological centre has issued a high alert across Odisha as an active cyclonic circulation over the north Andaman Sea is anticipated to evolve into a low-pressure area.
According to meteorological projections, the system is expected to move west-northwestwards, progressively intensifying into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal and subsequently turning into a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal by September 22.
The system is projected to draw closer to the southern Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of September 23, triggering a continuous spell of widespread rain and wind activity across the state from September 21 to September 24. Southern districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, and Kandhamala are expected to bear the brunt of the heavy to very heavy downpours, particularly on September 23 and 24.
In response to the looming threat, the local administration has been advised to stay fully prepared for potential waterlogging in low-lying areas and manage agricultural runoff efficiently. Furthermore, rough sea conditions with squally winds reaching speeds of 40 to 55 km/h are likely, prompting a strict advisory warning fishermen against venturing into the deep sea starting September 21. While the system’s exact intensity remains subject to further observation once the depression forms, district authorities have been urged to maintain utmost vigilance.
