The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the development of a fresh low-pressure system over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions near the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts around June 27.
This is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall across Odisha from June 26 to 29, reviving monsoon activity and prompting authorities to gear up for potential waterlogging and flood risks.
According to the IMD, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda are likely to experience rainfall today, while Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar are on alert for heavy showers between June 21 and 22. With intense rainfall already recorded in regions like Hirakud (32.6 mm), Sambalpur, and Talcher in recent days, the Subarnarekha River has crossed its danger mark, raising concerns of localised flooding.
Odisha had been facing a 42% rainfall deficit until mid-June, but a shift in weather conditions, triggered by the previous low-pressure system, has helped narrow the gap. Areas such as Similipal and Bareshani have seen significantly improved precipitation levels in the past week.
The IMD further expects the southwest monsoon to cover the entire country by June 26, indicating a crucial phase for agriculture and water resource management in eastern India.
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant, and district administrations are on alert to mitigate any emergencies.
