A controversy erupted at Sambalpur Women’s College after students accused English lecturer Dr Pitambar Behera of making obscene remarks.
Authorities transferred him to Dhenkanal Autonomous College, sparking debate over the handling of the case.
Students alleged that Behera used inappropriate language and displayed questionable behaviour during interactions. They reported the matter to English Department Head Mansbini Parida, who later faced transfer to Titilagarh Women’s Degree College in Balangir district.
Behera had earlier joined Sambalpur Women’s College from Sundargarh College. Within his first year, a student raised concerns, though no written complaint was filed. Recently, postgraduate students accused him of using vulgar expressions and intimidating behaviour.
During discussions with students, Behera allegedly recorded Parida’s remarks without consent. She accused him of misconduct and reported the matter to the college principal. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) initiated an inquiry, but no disciplinary action followed.
Parents and social organisation Progressive Sambalpur protested, demanding accountability. A student eventually lodged a police complaint. Despite this, officials opted for transfers rather than punitive measures.
The decision raised questions about administrative intent. Critics asked why the department head faced transfer alongside the accused lecturer. Observers said the move appeared designed to defuse tension rather than deliver justice.
