Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have raised concerns over a controversial umpiring decision during their IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Eden Gardens, with all-rounder Rovman Powell describing it as a “blunder.”
The incident occurred early in KKR’s innings when opener Finn Allen was dismissed for 9 runs. Allen attempted an aggressive shot off pacer Prince Yadav, resulting in a top edge that was caught near the boundary by LSG’s Digvesh Rathi.
Controversy Over Boundary Catch
Rathi completed the catch close to the boundary rope, but replays suggested that his foot may have been in contact with the boundary cushion. Despite the close call, the on-field umpires did not refer the decision to the third umpire, allowing the dismissal to stand.
Speaking after the match, Powell said the situation warranted further review.
“We’ve seen umpires go upstairs for much lesser decisions. Maybe it was a blunder on their part,” Powell said, while also clarifying that the team would not use the incident as an excuse for the defeat.
KKR Fall Short Despite Strong Total
Batting first, KKR posted a competitive total of 181 runs. The team looked in control for most of the match, especially after early breakthroughs against LSG’s top order, including key players like Aiden Markram and Rishabh Pant.
However, LSG staged a remarkable comeback, led by a match-winning innings from young batter Mukul Choudhary, who scored an unbeaten 54 off 27 balls to guide his team to a three-wicket victory on the final delivery.
Disappointment at Home Ground
The defeat marked another setback for KKR at their home venue, Eden Gardens, where they are yet to secure a win this season.
Powell acknowledged the disappointment but credited the opposition for their performance.
“You want to make your home ground a fortress, especially with the fans behind you. It’s disappointing, but full credit to the youngster for the way he batted,” he added.
Focus Shifts Ahead
While the umpiring decision remains a talking point, KKR will now look to regroup and improve their performance in upcoming matches as the IPL 2026 season progresses.
