Khawaja Asif, Pakistan’s Defence Minister, deleted a controversial social media post targeting Israel after facing strong international criticism and diplomatic pushback.
The remarks came at a sensitive time, as tensions remain high in the Middle East following a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States, with possible negotiations expected to take place in Islamabad.
In the now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), Asif used harsh language against Israel, referring to it as “evil” and making inflammatory remarks that drew widespread condemnation. The comments were made in response to Israel’s continued military actions in Lebanon, even as diplomatic efforts were underway.
Israel Responds Strongly
The response from Israel was swift and critical. A statement from the office of Benjamin Netanyahu described the remarks as “outrageous” and unacceptable, particularly from a country positioning itself as a neutral mediator in ongoing regional tensions.
Gideon Sa’ar also condemned the comments, calling them antisemitic and questioning Pakistan’s credibility in facilitating peace talks. Israeli officials emphasised that such statements undermine diplomatic efforts and escalate tensions further.
Context: Ongoing Regional Tensions
The controversy unfolded amid continued hostilities involving Israel and groups in Lebanon, alongside broader geopolitical friction involving Iran and the United States. While a temporary ceasefire has been announced between Washington and Tehran, the region remains volatile.
Pakistan has been viewed as a potential venue for negotiations between Iran and the United States. However, the recent remarks by Asif have raised concerns about its neutrality and diplomatic positioning.
Post Deleted Amid Pressure
Following the backlash, Khawaja Asif removed the post without issuing a detailed clarification. The deletion is widely seen as an attempt to ease tensions and avoid further diplomatic fallout.
The incident highlights the sensitivity of global diplomacy in times of conflict, where public statements by political leaders can significantly impact international relations. As negotiations continue, maintaining a balanced and respectful tone remains critical for countries seeking to play a constructive role in peace-building efforts.
