Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been officially ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, dealing a setback to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the ongoing season.
The confirmation came from LSG’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, during the team’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. He stated that the franchise is already preparing to bring in a replacement, with an announcement expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Injury and Fitness Concerns
Hasaranga, who was signed for Rs 2 crore in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s opening match in the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
In addition to the injury, reports indicate that the leg-spinner did not complete the mandatory fitness test required by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The fitness clearance is essential for centrally contracted players to receive a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in overseas leagues like the IPL.
Replacement Plans Underway
“We are preparing for the fact that he won’t be available,” Moody said, confirming that LSG management is actively evaluating replacement options. The franchise is expected to finalise a suitable player shortly.
LSG’s Season So Far
Despite Hasaranga’s absence, LSG have made a steady start to their IPL 2026 campaign. Led by Rishabh Pant, the team has secured two wins from three matches and currently sits mid-table.
Their recent victory over Kolkata Knight Riders showcased strong performances, including a match-winning knock from young batter Mukul Choudhary.
The bowling unit has also looked balanced, featuring players like Mohammed Shami, Shahbaz Ahmed, and emerging talents who have stepped up in key moments.
Impact on Team Strategy
While Hasaranga’s absence removes an experienced spin option, LSG appear confident in their existing squad depth. The team management believes the current combination can maintain momentum as the tournament progresses.
