Kolkata Knight Riders delivered a masterclass in disciplined bowling and composed chasing to defeat Mumbai Indians by four wickets in a rain-threat-free evening at Eden Gardens.
While batting flair was in short supply, tactical nous and calm heads under pressure defined a contest that never quite exploded but kept fans engaged till the final overs.
Mumbai Indians were rocked early, slumping to 23 for 3 inside the powerplay. The surface offered just enough for the slower bowlers, and KKR’s varied attack capitalised brilliantly. Tilak Varma tried to steady the ship with a gritty 20 off 32, while skipper Hardik Pandya contributed 26. However, momentum remained elusive until Corbin Bosch unleashed an explosive unbeaten 32 off just 18 balls in the death overs. Mumbai eventually posted 147 for 8 — a total that always looked under par on a good batting track.
KKR’s bowling unit shone collectively. Sunil Narine set the tone with an economical spell of 13 runs in his four overs, while Saurabh Dubey, Cameron Green, and Kartik Tyagi picked up crucial wickets at regular intervals, never allowing MI to break free.
In reply, Kolkata suffered early jolts too, slipping to 54 for 3. But Manish Pandey anchored the innings with a reliable 45 off 33 balls, forging a vital partnership with the hard-hitting Rovman Powell (40 off 30). Their stand kept the asking rate under control despite Mumbai’s intermittent breakthroughs, including a sharp spell from Bosch.
As the game entered the closing stages, Rinku Singh once again showed why he is a finisher par excellence, calmly guiding KKR home to 148 for 6 in just 18.5 overs. The victory keeps Kolkata’s campaign humming with momentum.
