A shocking firing incident in Katapanga village under Gochhapada police limits in Kandhamal district left one woman dead and another man critically injured on Tuesday morning.
Around 9 AM, Biranchi Behera opened fire on Narottam Behera and his wife while they were walking near Bagaramunda, about one kilometre from Katapanga. Narottam sustained serious injuries while his wife narrowly escaped. Immediately after the attack, Biranchi returned home and shot his wife, Nilima Behera, killing her on the spot.
Narottam was rushed to Phulbani Medical College in critical condition. Nilima’s body was seized by police for a post‑mortem. The sudden violence shocked villagers, who reported the matter to Gochhapada police.
Police detained Biranchi Behera and began interrogation. Officers registered a case at Gochhapada police station and launched an investigation to determine the motive. Authorities are probing whether past enmity or personal disputes triggered the firing. A police team also visited Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital to continue inquiries.
