Indian Railways has sanctioned infrastructure and technology upgrades worth over Rs 765 crore to modernise traction systems and strengthen digital communication across key corridors.

Duvvada–Visakhapatnam–Vizianagaram Section

₹318.07 crore has been cleared to upgrade the 106‑km section from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV electric traction. The corridor, part of the busy Howrah–Chennai route, carries minerals and industrial goods to Visakhapatnam Port. The upgrade will enhance freight capacity, improve speed potential, and ensure reliable passenger operations.

Raichur–Guntakal Section

Rs 259.39 crore has been sanctioned for upgrading the 126‑km Raichur–Guntakal section under South Central Railway. The traction system will shift to 2×25 kV, boosting train loads, operational reliability, and speed. Located on the Mumbai–Chennai route, the upgrade will support Vande Bharat services and contribute to Indian Railways’ mission of achieving 3,000 MT freight loading.

Vadodara and Mumbai Divisions

Rs 187.88 crore has been approved for laying 1,000 km of optical fibre cable in Vadodara and Mumbai Central Divisions of Western Railway. The 4×48 core OFC backbone will provide bandwidth, redundancy, and support for LTE‑based Kavach, India’s indigenous train collision avoidance system.

Strengthening Rail Infrastructure

These projects, part of the 2024–25 Railway Budget, aim to modernise traction systems, expand communication networks, and improve efficiency across freight and passenger corridors. The initiatives will enhance reliability, support modern trains, and strengthen digital infrastructure for safer operations.
