Kalahandi police achieved a major breakthrough by busting an active theft gang operating across Dharmagada subdivision.
Officers arrested four accused and recovered 78 grams of melted gold, Rs 4.42 lakh in cash, and burglary tools.
Police identified the accused as Kedarnath Das (46), Rakesh Bag (24), Duryodhan Harijan (52), and Rama Sagria alias Ram Harijan alias Raju. Investigators also named Jhasketan Meher of Limsera village as the receiver of stolen goods.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to multiple thefts in Golamunda, Kokasara, and Kegaon police limits. They admitted stealing gold ornaments, cash, and valuables, later melting the gold to conceal its origin before selling it to local receivers.
Based on their statements, police seized the stolen items and linked the gang to several registered cases — Golamunda PS cases 52, 61, and 76; Kokasara PS cases 247, 125, and 29; and Kegaon PS case 101.
Kalahandi police filed charges under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and produced the accused before the Dharmagada SDJM Court on Saturday. Officials said further investigation will trace other associates and receivers involved in the racket.
