Grigor Dimitrov produced a stunning comeback at Wimbledon 2026, defeating Matteo Berrettini in a five-set thriller to continue his remarkable return after a year-long injury layoff.
The Bulgarian, once ranked World No. 3, tore his pectoral muscle last year while leading eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets. That heartbreaking exit forced him to miss the US Open and struggle through subsequent tournaments. Ranked 146 now, Dimitrov entered Wimbledon with a wild card and little expectation.
He rediscovered his best tennis on the lawns of the All England Club. Dimitrov swept past Dane Sweeny in the first round, stunned 15th seed Jakub Mensik, and then outlasted Berrettini 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3 on Centre Court.
Speaking after the win, Dimitrov said, “After the way I exited last year, I’ll never know what would’ve happened, but this year I’m back here and able to rewrite everything again.” He added that overcoming obstacles mattered more than victories.
Dimitrov now faces British player Arthur Fery in the Round of 16, with a chance to reach the quarterfinals. His resilience and determination have turned his Wimbledon journey into a story of redemption.
