The Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department observed World Rabies Day with extensive statewide awareness initiatives across Odisha.
As part of the campaign, special educational sessions were conducted in more than 3,000 high schools throughout the state.
Veterinary doctors and departmental officials interacted directly with students, teachers, and staff, detailing the root causes, symptoms, prevention protocols, and medical treatment of rabies.
During the sessions, experts advised washing any animal bite or scratch thoroughly with soap and water, and stressed the importance of visiting a healthcare centre promptly for an anti-rabies vaccine.
Furthermore, officials underscored that safeguarding communities requires regular anti-rabies vaccination for pets and domestic animals.
“Building awareness from the school level is essential to strengthening collective efforts toward rabies eradication,” participating veterinarians noted during the sessions.
The programs also featured engaging quiz competitions and question-and-answer segments for students to reinforce learning.
Experts reiterated that combining early medical intervention, timely post-bite treatment, and systematic pet vaccination can successfully eliminate rabies, steering Odisha toward a safer, rabies-free future.
