Seven inmates at Bhubaneswar’s Jharpada Jail fell sick late Tuesday night, triggering concern among prison authorities.
Five inmates were admitted to Capital Hospital, and three of them remain in the ICU. Later, two critically ill prisoners were shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
Officials said the reason behind the sudden illness remains unclear. Medical teams at Capital Hospital are treating the affected inmates under tight security arrangements. Doctors continue to monitor the condition of those admitted to the ICU.
Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena visited Capital Hospital to review the situation and inquire about the inmates’ health. He directed officials to ensure proper medical care and maintain security around the hospital premises.
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine what caused the inmates to fall sick. Jail officials are examining food and water sources and checking for possible contamination. The incident has raised questions about hygiene and health standards inside the jail.
The administration assured that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent further illness among inmates. The situation remains under close observation as medical teams work to stabilise the affected prisoners.
