Iran Blames ‘Unreasonable’ US Demands as Islamabad Talks Collapse Over Nuclear and Hormuz Issues

High-stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad concluded without an agreement after more than 21 hours of continuous discussions, highlighting deep divisions on critical geopolitical issues.

According to Iranian state media, the talks broke down due to what Tehran described as “unreasonable” demands from Washington, particularly concerning nuclear policy and control over key maritime routes.

Key Issues Behind the Breakdown

Reports indicate that major points of contention included Iran’s nuclear programme and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy corridor.

Iranian officials maintained that their position was focused on safeguarding national interests, while the United States sought firm commitments related to nuclear development and regional security.

Iran’s Position on Negotiations

State broadcaster IRIB reported that the Iranian delegation engaged in extended, intensive discussions in an effort to reach a balanced outcome. However, it stated that progress was hindered by demands it considered excessive.

The Iranian side emphasised its commitment to protecting its rights and interests during the negotiation process, while also indicating that flexibility from all parties is necessary for meaningful progress.

Diplomatic Efforts and Mediation

The talks were hosted and facilitated by Pakistan, which aimed to encourage dialogue amid heightened tensions in the region. Despite the extended duration of the discussions, the absence of consensus underscores the complexity of the issues involved.

Implications for Regional Stability

The failure to reach an agreement raises concerns about continued uncertainty in West Asia, particularly regarding energy security and geopolitical stability. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point due to its importance in global oil transportation.

What Comes Next

While the current round of talks has ended without a deal, diplomatic engagement is expected to continue. Observers anticipate further negotiations as both sides assess their positions and explore potential pathways toward de-escalation.
